TESTIMONI INI AMAT MENYENTUH HATI DARI SEORANG WANITA YANG SANGAT STRESS. RUMAH TANGGANYA RETAK SERIBU...HATINYA HANCUR BERKECAI...

Saya seorang anak angkat dan saya tidak mengetahui siapakah sebenarnya keluarga kandung saya. Saya berkahwin 10 tahun yang lalu dgn seorang pemuda kacak dari keluarga yang kaya raya. 6 tahun berkahwin saya dikurniakan seorang putera dan selepas itu rumah tangga saya mula bergoncang kerana kehadiran orang ketiga. Saya sangat kecewa kerana saya ditendang terajang disebabkan oleh perempuan sial itu dan saya dijadikan sebagai hamba dirumah saya sendiri. Lelaki yang bergelar "suami dan bapa" kepada anak saya, sangat kejam kerana dia akan membawa pulang perempuan sial itu setiap hari dan bermesra dengannya dihadapan mata saya. Saya harus menyiapkan makan malam untuk mereka, mencuci pakaian mereka dan berbagai-bagai lagi. Dihalaunya saya tidur di bilik tetamu. Saya juga tidak dibenarkan memandu kereta kerana kereta saya telah diberi kepada perempuan sial itu. Putera saya yg bernama Putera Zulkhaires...juga turut menjadi mangsa dalam masalah perkahwinanku ini kerana tidak dapat perhatian dan kasih sayang sepenuhnya dari lelaki yang bergelar "Bapa". Perempuan sial itu adalah dari negara jiran dan dia sungguh tidak berhati perut melakukannya kepada kaum sejenisnya. Allah SWT Maha Melihat dan Maha Berkuasa...

Yes, jika sahabat semua membaca tentu ada yang mengatakan saya seorang yang BODOH, memang benar saya memang sangat BODOH dan NAIF pada masa itu. Saya menjadi begitu disebabkan perasaan cinta yang sangat mendalam membuatkan saya menjadi BUTA, PEKAK dan BISU...Tidak nampak kekejamannya, tidak menghiraukan nasihat orang dan tidak dapat berkata apa-apa.
Sehinggalah pada suatu hari suami saya menghalau saya dan anak keluar dari rumah itu, lalu saya pun pergi ke rumah mertua saya untuk meminta bantuan. Mereka amat menyayangi saya tetapi tidak dapat melakukan apa-apa selain dari memarahi dan menasihati anak mereka. Tapi apakan daya, nafsu syaitan menguasai dirinya, dia tidak menghiraukan kata-kata ibubapanya. Saya diberi sebuah rumah dan wang setiap bulan oleh keluarga mentua saya sehinggalah hari ini. Lalu mereka membantu saya untuk mendapatkan talak satu, iaitu bercerai dengan bekas suami saya.

Pada masa itu saya seperti separuh gila...dunia saya seperti terbelah dua dan saya hanya ingin membunuh diri untuk pergi jauh dari hidupnya. Keluarga mentua saya banyak membantu dan memberi semangat untuk terus bangun dan melangkah kehadapan. Sukar kerana aku bukannya seorang yang berpelajaran atau rupawan, pula ti tidak mempunyai keluarga sendiri...ibubapa angkatku telah meninggal dunia selepas 3 tahun aku berkahwin akibat kemalangan.
Selepas beberapa bulan... ibu mentua saya tiba-tiba nampak cantik dan fit. Lalu saya pun bertanyalah padanya, betulkah apa yang saya nampak. Perubahan amat ketara. Dia pun mencerita bahawa dia dalam Program Mikross dgn Ms Ross. Tapi pada ketika itu bukannya online tetapi Ms Ross ada buat kat ofis dan private place(Secret Training). Tiba-tiba saya bersemangat untuk memulihkan semula segala-galanya dan mengambil program(Secret Training) itu dan sekaligus membeli produk-produk keluaran Nuorico.

Ms Ross memang banyak membantu saya, mengajar saya untuk lebih yakin dengan diri sendiri. Yang bestnya...dia ni seorang yang ikhlas, baik, smart, penyabar, periang tapi sangat tegas dalam kerjanya. Memang tak kasi muka punyalah bila dia melatih saya...dera habissss...sorry ya Ms Ross. Tapi berbaloi,saya beri 10 star kepadanya. Apa yang dia janjikan, akan dikotakan dan dilakukan dengan hati yang terbuka....jika dia nampak saya ada masalah atau murung, dia tidak akan melatih saya pada hari itu dan ditukar kepada sesi motivasi. Kerana kata Ms Ross, "Minda mesti kuat untuk mengejar impian dan harus menjadi good student kerana tidak guna jika mempunyai Good Coach/Teacher but YOU are not a Good Student. Buang masa, tenaga dan wang sahaja..."
Produk beautisleep dan Protecur100 memang membantu saya untuk memulihkan tenaga, berfikir lebih rasional dan positif. Kulit wajah saya berseri-seri dan N5 membantu melicin dan mencerahkan lagi kulit wajah saya. Kesihatan saya bertambah baik dan bertenaga untuk melakukan program Mikross yang diberi. Stress saya baaaannnyakkk berkurangan seperti seketul batu yang sangat besar melantun keluar dari otak saya. Bentuk badan saya dah mengancam semula dan kehidupan saya kembali segar. Dalam masa 6 bulan dengan Ms Ross, saya bukan lagi Honey yang dulu tetapi saya adalah orang baru dalam tubuh yang sama. Saya dah tidak murung lagi malah bertambah ceria dari dahulu. Sekarang saya dah mula berjinak-jinak sedikit dalam perniagaan internet yang diajar oleh Ms Ross iaitu Mikross Network.

Saya ingin memberi segala-galanya kepada Puteraku yang telah diketepikan selama ini disebabkan diriku yang telah separuh mati itu. Betul kata Ms Ross, wanita harus smart atau bijak dalam menjalani hidup ini walaupun kita berada dalam "Zon Keselesaan".

Saya terpanggil untuk share testi sendiri menggunakan Beautisleep & Protecur100. Mmg x silap lg yg Beautisleep ni satu pakej lengkap, baca sajalah testi2 yg ada kat blog Kak Ross ni. Beautisleep bkn saja dpt kuruskn bdn, malah boleh awet muda & yg penting, ehem ehem.. tingkatkn hubungan suami isteri.


Tapi yg saya nak share ttg Beautisleep kali ni lain dari yg biasa, dimana Beautisleep telah membantu saya mendptkn rehat yg cukup, salah satu faktor yg penting utk hidup yg sihat & hepi bkn?

Sebenarnya kerja saya amat memenatkn, dimana saya bekerja dlm 12-jam shift, 2 minggu shift pagi, then 2 minggu shift mlm. yg lbeh memenatkn bila tiba shift mlm, perlu menjaga kepentingan client2 dari HQ, USA. tambah pula ada

hati nk wat bisness as side income, tido 3-4 jam sehari mmg dh biasa. memndgkn saya ni 'light sleeper', mmg snang terjaga dan tido pn teringt2 keje di ofis. Bdn slalu lesu, dan sentiasa mengantuk.

Alhamdulillah, slps mengamalkn Beautisleep, saya bkn saja dpt kuruskn bdn, malah sgt2 membantu saya mendapatkn rehat yg cukup. Tido jadi sgt nyenyak, somehow x risau lg ttg keje2 di ofis. Bila tido nyenyak, bdn jd segar walaupn cuma lelap skjp. Lg semngat sy nk bekerja & berbisness. Bagus bkn?

Bkn setakat itu saja, kesihatan pn meningkat slps mengamalkn Protecur. Seblm ni, saya mmg slalu selsema, bersin, disebabkn mslh resdung yg teruk. Pernah juga batuk selama 2 minggu, dan tak kurang2 walaup slps mengambil ubat doktor (bkn ubat doktor tk bagus ya, cuma kurang berkesan dan mungkin perlu ditambah dosnya. lg pun saya slalu sbok, malas nk ke klinik byk kali). Tp alhamdullialah, sehari saya mengamalkn Protecur, batuk terus berkurangan dan beberapa ari lps tu, dh sembuh sepenuhnya. wahh...sungguh x percaya tp mmg terbukti Protecur ni berkesan.

URINARY INCONTINENCE IN WOMEN - MUST READ!



What is urinary incontinence?

Urinary incontinence is when urine leaks out before you can get to a bathroom. If you have urinary incontinence, you're not alone. Millions of women have this problem.

What causes urinary incontinence?

There are many reasons why a woman may leak urine. Sometimes it's caused by an illness, in which case bladder control returns when the illness goes away. For example, bladder infections and infections in the vagina can cause incontinence for a short time. Being unable to have a bowel movement or taking certain medicines also may make it hard to control your bladder.

Sometimes incontinence is an ongoing problem, in which case the cause might be:

  • the bladder cannot empty completely
  • weakening of the muscles that help to hold or release urine
  • a blocked urinary passage
  • damage to the nerves that control the bladder

Sometimes, diseases such as arthritis make it hard to get to the bathroom in time and can make it even harder to control urine leakage.

How common is urinary incontinence?

More than 13 million Americans - male and female, young and old - have incontinence. Women are more likely to leak urine than men.

Older women have more bladder control problems than younger women. But loss of bladder control does not have to happen as you age. If you're leaking urine, talk to your doctor about it. Your doctor can help you.

Does having a baby cause urinary incontinence?

Yes. It can, but don't panic. If you lose bladder control after having a baby, the problem often goes away by itself. Your muscles may just need time to recover.

Being pregnant also can cause leakage due to:

  • pressure of the pregnancy on the bladder and pelvic muscles
  • vaginal delivery
  • episiotomy (the cut in the muscle that makes it easier for the baby to come out)
  • damage to bladder control nerves

If you still have bladder problems six weeks after having your baby, talk to your doctor. Without treatment, lost bladder control can become a long-term problem. Leaking can also result from some medical conditions, including neurologic injury, birth defects, strokes, multiple sclerosis, and physical problems associated with aging.

Sometimes bladder control problems show up years after you've had your baby. Some women do not have problems until later, often in their 40's.

Unborn babies push down on the bladder, urethra (tube that you urinate from) and pelvic muscles.

Does menopause affect urinary incontinence?

Yes. Some women have bladder control problems after they stop having periods (called menopause or change of life). After your periods end, your body stops making the female hormone estrogen. Some experts think this loss of estrogen weakens the vaginal tissue.

If you're leaking urine, talk to your doctor about it. Your doctor can help you.

Are there different types of urinary incontinence?

Yes.

  • Stress incontinence - leakage happens with coughing, sneezing, exercising, laughing, lifting heavy things, and other movements that put pressure on the bladder. It is the most common type of incontinence. It can be treated and sometimes cured.
  • Urge incontinence - this is sometimes called "overactive bladder." Leakage usually happens after a strong, sudden urge to urinate. The sudden urge may occur when you don't expect it, such as during sleep, after drinking water, or when you hear running water or touch it.
  • Functional incontinence - leaking because you can't get to a toilet in time. People with this type of incontinence may have problems thinking, moving, or speaking that keep them from reaching a toilet. For example, a person with Alzheimer's disease may not plan a trip to the bathroom in time to urinate. A person in a wheelchair may be unable to get to a toilet in time.
  • Overflow incontinence - leaking urine because the bladder doesn't empty completely. Overflow incontinence is less common in women.
  • Mixed incontinence - two or more types of incontinence together, most often stress and urge incontinence.
  • Transient incontinence - leaking urine for a short time due to an illness such as a bladder infection. Leaking stops when the illness is treated.
How do I talk to my doctor about urinary incontinence?

Most people don't want to talk to their doctor about such a personal topic. But keep in mind that urinary incontinence is a common medical problem. Millions of women have the same problem, so your doctor has probably heard many stories like yours.

Even if you feel shy, it is up to you to take the first step. Some doctors don't treat bladder control problems, so they may not think to ask about it. Others might expect you to bring up the subject. If your doctor doesn't treat bladder problems, ask for help finding a doctor who does.

Here are some questions to ask your doctor:

  • Could what I eat or drink cause bladder problems?
  • Could my medicines (prescription or over-the-counter) cause bladder problems?
  • Could other medical conditions cause loss of bladder control?
  • What are the treatments to regain bladder control? Which one is best for me?
  • What can I do about the odor and rash caused by urine?

It may help to write down when you leak urine. Be sure to note what you were doing at the time, for example, sneezing, coughing, laughing, or sleeping. Take this log with you when you visit your doctor.

How do I find out if I have urinary incontinence?

The first step is to see your doctor. If your doctor doesn't treat bladder problems, ask for help finding someone who does.

Your doctor will ask you about your symptoms and take a medical history. Your doctor will ask you:

  • how often you empty your bladder
  • how and when you leak urine
  • how much urine you leak

Your doctor will do a physical exam to look for signs of health problems that can cause incontinence. Your doctor also will do a test to figure out how well your bladder works and how much it can hold. For this test, you will drink water and urinate into a measuring pan, after which your doctor will measure any urine still in the bladder. Your doctor also may order one or more of the following other tests:

  • Stress test - while you cough or bear down, the doctor watches for loss of urine.
  • Urinalysis - you give a urine sample, which is tested for signs of infection and other causes of incontinence.
  • Blood test - you give a blood sample, which is sent to a lab where it is tested for signs of other causes of incontinence.
  • Ultrasound - sound waves are used to take a picture of the kidneys, bladder, and urethra. Your doctor will look to see if there are any problems in these areas that could cause incontinence.
  • Cystoscopy - a thin tube with a tiny camera is placed in the urethra to view the inside of the urethra and bladder.
  • Urodynamics - a thin tube is placed into your bladder and your bladder is filled with water. Your doctor measures the pressure in the bladder.

Your doctor may ask you to write down when you empty your bladder and how much urine you produce for a day or a week.

Is there anything I can do to prevent urinary incontinence?

Yes. Exercising your pelvic floor muscles regularly can help prevent bladder problems. These exercises are called Kegels.

How to do Kegel exercises:

  1. It may be easier to begin practicing these exercises while lying down.
  2. Squeeze the muscles in your genital area as if you were trying to stop the flow of urine or trying to stop from passing gas. Try not to squeeze the muscles in your belly or legs at the same time.
  3. Relax. Squeeze the muscles again and hold for 3 seconds. Then relax for 3 seconds. Do this 8 more times. Work up to 5 sets of 10.
  4. When your muscles get stronger, do your exercises sitting or standing. You can do these exercises any time, while sitting at your desk, in the car, waiting in line, doing the dishes, etc.

Be patient. It may take 3 to 6 weeks before you see results.

If you're not sure you're doing Kegel exercises right, ask your doctor or nurse to check you while you try to do them. If you aren't squeezing the right muscles, your doctor or nurse can teach you the right way to do the exercises. A pelvic floor physical therapist may be available in your area to help teach you how to strengthen these muscles or help you with other treatments.

How is urinary incontinence treated?

There are many ways to treat incontinence. Your doctor will work with you to find the best treatment for you.

Treatments include:

  • Pelvic Muscle Exercises (Kegel exercises) - easy exercises to make your pelvic muscles stronger. Doing these exercises every day can help reduce or cure stress leakage.

  • If you're not sure you're doing Kegel exercises right, ask your doctor or nurse to check you while you try to do them. If you aren't squeezing the right muscles, your doctor or nurse can teach you the right way to do the exercises. A pelvic floor physical therapist may be available in your area to help teach you how to strengthen these muscles or help you with other treatments listed below.
  • Electrical Stimulation - electrodes are placed in the vagina or rectum for a short time to stimulate nearby muscles and make them stronger. This treatment can reduce both stress incontinence and urge incontinence.
  • Biofeedback - biofeedback helps you learn how your body works. A therapist puts an electrical patch over your bladder and urethral muscles. A wire connected to the patch is linked to a TV screen. You and your therapist watch the screen to see when these muscles contract, so you can learn to control these muscles. Biofeedback can be used with pelvic muscle exercises and electrical stimulation to help control stress incontinence and urge incontinence.
  • Timed Voiding or Bladder Retraining - there are two ways you can train your bladder to hold urine better. In timed voiding, you urinate at set times instead of waiting for a strong urge. To do bladder retraining, you slowly increase the time between your scheduled voiding times to train your bladder to hold urine better. These treatments can reduce urge incontinence and overflow incontinence. A doctor can tell you if these may help you.
  • Weight Loss - extra weight puts more pressure on your bladder and nearby muscles, which can cause bladder control problems. If you're overweight, work with your doctor to plan a diet and exercise program that works for you.
  • Dietary Changes - certain foods and drinks can cause incontinence, such as caffeine (found in coffee, some sodas, and chocolate), tea, and alcohol. Limiting these foods and drinks can reduce incontinence.
  • Medications - medications can reduce some types of leakage. Talk to your doctor to see if medication is right for you.
  • Pessary - a pessary is a small device that fits in your vagina and helps hold it up. A pessary can help reduce leakage. Your doctor or nurse will decide which type and size of pessary is right for you and will check the pessary regularly.
  • Implants - your doctor may suggest injecting a material into the space around the urethra with a needle. This material thickens the area around the urethra so you can control your urine flow better.
  • Surgery - surgery can fix problems such as blocked areas. It can also support the bladder or the urethra to prevent loss of urine. A surgeon can also put a small device in the body that acts on nerves to control bladder activity.
  • Urethral Inserts - a urethral insert is a thin tube that you place inside the urethra that blocks urine from coming out. You take the tube out when you need to urinate and then put it back in until you need to urinate again.
  • External Urethral Barrier - this device is a small foam or gel disposable pad that you place over the opening of the urethra. The pad seals itself against your body, keeping you from leaking. When you go to the bathroom you take it off. After urinating you place a new pad over the urethra.
  • Catheters - if nothing else helps, the doctor may suggest catheters, thin tubes placed in the bladder by a doctor or by you. A catheter drains the bladder for you, sometimes into an attached bag.

Ya memang memalukan untuk mengaku ada penyakit ni ke seluruh dunia sebab boleh menimbulkan fitnah dan tohmahan yang pelbagai. Tapi setiap penyakit yang Allah berikan pada kita ada hikmahnya. Atas dasar tersebut dan disebabkan kesengsaraan yang boleh membuatkan pesakit ni sasau, maka saya buka pekung dan nak berkongsi masalah penyakit ni dan bagaimana cara atasinya, or at least to put it under control. Hanya orang yang pernah alami masalah ni tahu bagaimana sengsaranya melalui saat itu. saya pasti beribu jika tak berjuta wanita alami penyakit ni.

Candida / candidiasis adalah istilah perubatan atau Yeast Overgrowth dalam bahasa Inggeris; di kalangan masyarakat Melayu pula dipanggil Keputihan. Ia boleh menyerang mulut (oral) atau saluran Vagina / Faraj. Khusus tentang alat kelamin, penyakit ni bila menyerang, awalnya air atau discaj yang keluar jernih dan sedikit keputihan tapi gatal terutama sekitar labia. TESTIMONI ANAK KEMBAR KESAYANGANKU MENDERITA SEBELUM NEIBAC5 HADIR DALAM HIDUP KAMI SEKELUARGA...

Saya ingin memberi kenyataan yang benar, memang benar produk Neibac5 sememangnya sangat bagus dan mujarab. Anak saya menghadapi masalah kulit yang teruk dan gatal selurah badan. Anak-anak saya selalu menangis dan merenget sehingga saya terpaksa berhenti dari bekerja.

Eat an apple a day. Doing that could help you remember to eat an apple a day.

In addition, scientific research continues to build more and more evidence that antioxidants in apples are protective against cardiovascular disease and cancer development.

Apples just make sense as a daily part of the human diet.

Our forebears instinctively came to that same conclusion and adopted the maxim, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." They did not understand on a physiological basis why apple consumption was associated with health. Modern scientific studies are unraveling the reasons.

Some of the research is epidemiological. Large populations are studied for their dietary habits, and correlations between food intake and health consequences are identified. Researchers also have the tools now to study how particular constituents in foods react at the molecular level within our cells to do us ill or good.

Antioxidants
This line of research has led to the discovery of the benefits of antioxidants. Our cells can be harmed by free radicals-unavoidable substances in our bodies formed through natural living processes—but antioxidant compounds can reduce the damage and lessen the likelihood that disease will ensue. Fruits and vegetables as a whole contain a wide range of helpful antioxidants. Hence the advice to

eat at least five servings a day of fruits and vegetables is so sound. Apples are not the only health-imparting food in that group, but they make a vital contribution. Wisdom based on up-to-date science says to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables and include at least one apple within your daily intake.

Aging
We deteriorate with age. Our motor skills degenerate. We have trouble remembering things. Antioxidants to the rescue!

Studies at various research institutions around the world, particularly the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Jean Mayer Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging based at Tufts University in Boston, Mass., have linked the consumption of diets high in antioxidants with reduction in aging-related mental and physical degeneration. Oxidative stress (high incidence of free radicals) has been associated with such diseases as diabetic polyneuropathy (nerve damage in diabetics) and cardiomyopathy (heart muscle damage), according to an article in the May 2002 issue of Journal of Neural Transmission.Researchers at the James A. Haley Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Tampa, Fla., reporting in the July 15, 2002 issue of Journal of Neuroscience, noted that diets containing selected high-antioxidant foods actually reversed declines in particular physiological functions associated with aging-related mental deterioration. The Tufts scientists in collaboration with colleagues from Colorado and Pennsylvania, publishing in Brain Research in the June 2, 2000 issue, documented evidence that "age-related deficits in motor learning and memory can be reversed with nutritional interventions." They pointed out the relevance of these findings to rehabilitative strategies for victims of strokes.

The foods that have been touted the most for these positive factors are blueberries, strawberries and spinach. Apples are ranked as "intermediate" in this respect. British analysis from King's College in London, published in the February 2002 issue of Free Radical Research, listed various antioxidant components within the phenolic families of compounds found in fruits and vegetables. Darker foods like blueberries, strawberries and raspberries are rich in anthocyanins, which "demonstrated the highest antioxidant activities." Scientists at the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition in Los Angeles, Calif., included most apples in this category, stating in the November 2001 Journal of Nutrition that "red-purple foods contain anthocyanins, which are powerful antioxidants found in red apples, grapes, berries and wine." Apples also have flavonoid antioxidants, including catechins and quercetin, to add to their beneficial potency. The Tampa study showed that apples "significantly downregulated" an age-related inflammatory response in the brain that is thought to contribute to deterioration in mental processes.

As the level of understanding of the human brain and neurological system advances, a tendency grows to hype "miracle foods" as quick fixes for whatever ails us. A more moderate position is simply to recommend greater consumption of all fruits and vegetables on a consistent basis, including plenty of apples. They can all contribute something worthwhile. Apples and some other fruits and vegetables appear to be brain food. Apples can be savored simply because they are so delicious, but you may also achieve a side benefit—making your brain work better!

Wrinkles
An article published by Australian researchers in the February 2001 issue of
Journal of the American College of Nutrition was titled "Skin wrinkling: can food make a difference?" The answer was a conditional yes. Elderly populations were monitored in Australia, Greece and Sweden as part of the International Union of Nutritional Sciences "Food Habits in Later Life" study. Dietary intakes were recorded, and the subjects' skin wrinkles were measured "using a cutaneous microtopographic method." The findings were that "a high intake of vegetables, legumes and olive oil appeared to be protective against cutaneous actinic [sun-caused] skin damage." Meat and butter and other dairy products appeared to have adverse effects. An Anglo-Celtic group of subjects consumed more apples, prunes and tea than other ethnic subjects did, and those foods apparently contributed to favorable results. As usual, the scientists qualified their findings as less than definitive, since it was only one research project. Their official conclusion: "This study illustrates that skin wrinkling in a sun-exposed site in older people of various ethnic backgrounds may be influenced by the types of foods consumed." Eating apples and vegetables is certainly cheaper than a bill for cosmetic surgery!

Hair Growth
Japanese researchers extracted a particular chemical compound from
apples named procyanidin B-2 and studied its effect on hair epithelial cells in lab animals. Their conclusion, published in the January 2002 issue of British Journal of Dermatology, was that the compound promotes hair growth. The topic of whether or not it could do so on portions of the human male cranium that formerly boasted hair but currently do not was not addressed.

Cholera
Cholera, a scourge in the U.S. during pioneer days, has not been a problem here for more than a century. But outbreaks still occur elsewhere around the world. It's good to know apples can help. Japanese researchers, reporting in
Microbiology and Immunology this year, administered a polyphenol compound extracted from immature apples to laboratory animal subjects and found it inhibited the effects of the cholera toxin in a dose-dependent manner—the more of the extract the animals ingested, the greater the control against symptoms. Apples appear to be good medicine—or, to use a more modern terminology, "effective nutriceuticals" (substances in plant foods that have protective and therapeutic values).

COPD
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) leaves its victims gasping for breath. Dutch scientists studied whether the flavonoid class of food compounds, including catechins, could improve symptoms in COPD patients. Tea and
apples were the primary sources of the flavonoids. Results showed a positive association with improved lung function, including lowered incidence of coughing and breathlessness. The researchers stated in the July 1, 2001 issue of American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, "Solid fruit, but not tea, intake was beneficially associated with COPD. Our results suggest a beneficial effect of a high intake of catechins and solid fruits against COPD." That is, eating apples may very well help.

Bladder Cancer
Bladder cancer is a risk associated with the smoking of tobacco. French researchers, writing in the October 1996 issue of
Carcinogenesis and the June 18, 1998 issue of Mutation Research, described their investigations into the inhibitory effects of dietary phenolics on the development of carcinogenic substances in the bladder. Their conclusion was that "overall, our study strongly suggests that smokers ingesting dietary phenolics, probably flavonoids, are partially protected against the harmful effects by tobacco carcinogens within their bladder mucosal cells." The foods cited as "important sources of dietary flavonoids which are probably responsible for the anti-mutagenicity associated with foods and beverages" were apples, onions, lettuce and red wine.

Lung Cancer
Scientists at the University of Hawaii's Cancer Research Center of Hawaii in Honolulu investigated possible relationships between flavonoid intake and lung cancer risk. They wrote in
Journal of the National Cancer Institute in its January 19, 2000 issue that "we found statistically significant inverse associations between lung cancer risk and the main food sources of the flavonoids quercetin (onions and apples) and naringin (white grapefruit)." They concluded that "if replicated, particularly in prospective studies, these findings would suggest that foods rich in certain flavonoids may protect against certain forms of lung cancer." That is, quercetin may have a protective effect against lung cancer, and apples are among the richest foods in the beneficial quercetin.

Prostate
Belgian researchers from Antwerp, writing in
European Urology in 1999, noted that the low-fat, high-fiber diets typical in Asia are associated with lower incidences of prostate cancer and prostate enlargement in comparison with rates in the U.S. and Europe. Phytoestrogens (estrogenic compounds in plants) have been proposed as the preventive agents. Flavonoids are among one class of phytoestrogens, and, the authors stated, "apples, onions and tea-leaves are excellent sources of flavonoids." Many plant compounds also help by inhibiting particular enzymes that are "crucial to cellular proliferation," which is a mechanism present in cancer.

Stroke
The U.S. Department of Agriculture scientists based at Tufts University noted in the September 15, 1999
Journal of Neuroscience that phytochemicals (chemicals found in plants) that are present in antioxidant-rich foods have for some time been known to have beneficial effects in relation to cancer and the cardiovascular system. Finnish researchers, writing in the May 2000 issue of European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, discussed a 28-year study of intake of the flavonoid quercetin by more than 9,000 Finnish men and women, about 9% of whom experienced cardiovascular disease during that period.Apples were the major source of quercetin for the study population. The researchers' conclusion was that "the results suggest that the intake of apples is related to a decreased risk of thrombotic stroke."

Heart Disease
Some of the same Finnish researchers conducted another long-term study on the association of dietary consumption of flavonoids and subsequent heart attack mortality. The primary sources of flavonoids were
apples and onions. The scientists concluded, according to their report in the February 24, 1996 issue of British Medical Journal, that "the results suggest that people with very low intakes of flavonoids have higher risks of coronary disease." So eat apples for your heart's sake.

Dutch epidemiologists have made similar studies among their own populations, including a long-term monitoring of elderly residents in the city of Zutphen that began in 1985. Over the years a total of 11% of the men in the study died of ischemic heart disease. The key substance being studied was catechins, part of the flavonoid family, which were ingested mainly from apples, black tea and chocolate. The findings, reported in the August 2001 issue of American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, were that "catechin intake was inversely associated with ischemic heart disease." The conclusion: "Catechins, whether from tea or other sources, may reduce the risk of ischemic heart disease mortality." Eat apples, and wash them down with tea—sounds like a winning combination.

The Dutch researchers also did a study in 1998 to develop information on catechin intake by a representative population from very young to very old. Tea was the main source of catechins across all age groups, and apples and pears ran second for adults and the elderly. Smokers had lower catechin consumption than non-smokers, as did persons with lower socioeconomic status compared with those of higher socioeconomic status. The researchers noted in the February 2001 issue of European Journal of Clinical Nutrition that "catechins are quantitatively important bioactive components of the daily diet, which should be taken into account when studying the relation between diet and chronic diseases." And apples are rich in catechins.

Postmenopausal women would do well to eat plenty of apples, according to a Dutch-and-American study of nearly 35,000 Iowa residents from 1986 to 1998. A little over 2% of the subjects died from coronary heart disease during that period. An inverse association of catechin intake with risk of that disease was determined. The scientists wrote in the November 2001 Epidemiology that "of the major catechin sources, apples and wine were inversely associated with coronary heart disease death."

Cholesterol
Numerous studies over the past quarter century have shown that a diet rich in apples can help lower blood cholesterol. Pectin, a soluble fiber found in apples at a rate of .78 grams per 100 grams of edible fruit, is thought to play a significant role in that relationship. Other fruits and vegetables also contain pectin, but apples are a handy and excellent means toward cholesterol reduction.

How handy? Food scientists at the University of California at Davis studied the composition of apple juice, including phenols, anthocyanins and flavonols. They found that apple juice inhibits the oxidation of the harmful form of cholesterol (LDL, or low-density lipoprotein). That is, you can drink your apples, whether as cider or clarified apple juice, and help protect your circulatory system. The scientists wrote inLife Sciences in 1999, "Although the specific components in the apples juices and extracts that contributed to antioxidant activity have yet to be identified, this study found that both fresh apple and commercial apple juices inhibited copper-catalyzed LDL oxidation. The in-vitro antioxidant activity of apples supports the inclusion of this fruit and its juice in a healthy human diet." So drink up!

And keep at it! Dutch scientists studied the bioavailability of quercetin—that is, how well the human body absorbs it and retains it. If it goes right through your system without getting into your crucial cells, you could ingest all the apples you want and not derive the full benefit. The news out of this study is good. As the researchers reported in the November 24, 1997 issue of FEBS Letters, peak levels of quercetin from appleswere found 2 1/2 hours after ingestion. The half-life for apples was 23 hours. In other words, after that period the level was still at half the peak. The researchers wrote, "Because of the long half-lives of elimination, repeated consumption of quercetin-containing foods will cause accumulation of quercetin in blood."
